History

I first released an early version of this guide back in 2021. Hard to believe it’s been that long.

Even then, I felt there was some heavy lifting to be done. The Amber Temple is an incredible location in an equally incredible campaign, but it always struck me as something that was… shoehorned in. It lacked context, depth, and strong ties to the broader story of Barovia.

That said, I don’t see this as a flaw. In many ways, it’s a strength. The gaps invite creative DMs to expand, interpret, and weave their own stories into the world.

Still, I’m one of those people who always asks: why?

Context and intent matter.

What We’re Given

The core material gives us only a loose framework for two of the most important elements in the Amber Temple:

  • How Strahd von Zarovich became a vampire
  • Who Exethanter is (or was)

We are told...

  • Exethanter arrived after the original wizards were gone
  • He became a lich through the temple’s dark secrets
  • He now guards the temple, though his mind is failing
  • Strahd came seeking immortality, made a pact, and became a vampire
  • The Dark Powers turned Barovia into a prison

It is evocative, but also vague.

And for me, it raised more questions than answers:

  • Who was Exethanter before all this?
  • Why is his mind deteriorating?
  • What exactly are the Dark Vestiges?
  • Who built the Amber Temple and why?

Building the Missing Pieces

Around the same time, I was developing the Fey Quest, an optional storyline centered on restoring Barovia and recovering the three lost gems.

As I worked through it, I realized something: There were already so many elements in Barovia that fit the Amber Temple, they just needed to be connected. It felt like a giant jigsaw puzzle that wasn't finished.

So I started putting it together.

Reimagining the Amber Temple

Here is what emerged:

  • Exethanter is Khazan
The wizard who built of Van Richten's tower, a friend of the fey, whose story now ties directly into the temple.
  • The Fey Built the Temple
Not as a place of power, but as a prison. A desperate attempt to contain the Dark Vestiges.
  • The Lost Gem Connection
Khazan hid the red gem of the Mountain Fey within a secret chamber, giving purpose to the otherwise massive empty Central Chamber Area X31.
Empty Central Chamber X31
  • Strahd and the Vampyr Vestige
Strahd didn’t just make a pact, he helped free the Vampyr vestige from a breached amber sarcophagus (X33d Breached Vault).
Suddenly, the presence of nothics (former wizards) in that area makes sense, they are aware of what escaped.
X33d. Breached Vault. A sarcophagus that once stood in the north alcove lies shattered on the floor.

Everything begins to click into place.

Player-Facing Rewards

I also wanted to make the Amber Temple feel worth it for players, not just narratively, but tangibly.

So I created three free player handouts:

  • Knight’s Journal
Chronicles the fall of the temple and ties into the Gates of Tsolenka
  • Artimus’ Journal
Insights from the architect of Ravenloft
  • Ravenloft Plans
A partially obscured series of maps of Castle Ravenloft, no secrets revealed, but incredibly useful.

After all, if players make it all the way to the Amber Temple, they deserve something meaningful.

Evolving the Dark Vestiges

One of the biggest and most elegant overhauls was the Dark Vestiges themselves.

I introduced:

  • A clear interaction system
  • Structured boons and banes
  • Gradual madness and physical transformations

This makes it far easier for DMs to run and for players to truly feel the weight of their choices.

And then came the fun part. We had supporters record voice lines for each vestige.

Each one whispers, tempts, and manipulates in its own unique way, bringing the experience to life in a way I never expected.
